Calcium and Vitamind D Prevent Prednisone Related Bone Loss
Long term use of prednisone, a corticosteroid, which is often used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and other autoimmune diseases and allergies, been known to cause substantial loss of bone mineral leading to osteoporosis. Researchers at the Medical Collage of Virginia reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine that supplementation with 1000mg/day of elemental calcium and 500iu of vitamin D counteracts this side effect of prednisone therapy.
