What is “test tube baby?”
"Test tube baby" is a term used to loosely refer to any embryo or new born infant who may have been produced from the fertilizations of an ovum outside of the mother’s womb. This revolutionary intervention in fertilization was pioneered in England 1978 when the world’s first test tube baby, Louise Joy Brown was born. In vitro fertilization (in vitro is Latin for in glass) is a technique where an egg is taken from a woman’s ovary and fertilized with sperm in a test tube ( or a laborator dish), and then returned to a womb to grow.
Presently, in vitro fertilization is a common medical practice used in helping childless women conceive and carry a baby to childbirth. In the US, some 45,000 individuals have been conceived using in vitro fertilization since 1981.
